RO water purifiers may use chemicals in their process, including antiscalants to prevent mineral buildup, cleaning agents (acids and alkalis) for membrane upkeep, and biocides to control bacteria. Coagulants and flocculants can also be used in pretreatment to remove suspended solids. pH-adjusting chemicals, such as sulfuric acid or sodium hydroxide, may be added to optimize membrane performance. Finally, disinfectants such as sodium hypochlorite are sometimes used to kill microbes in the water supply before it reaches the RO membrane.
